Attendance: Absences, tardies, and early sign-out

California law requires that all children between the ages of 6 and 18 attend school. It is very important for students to arrive at school on time. However, if your child will be 30+ mins. late or absent, please call the office by 9 a.m. at 510-748-4013. You may call at any time of the day or night to leave a message. A phone call is the best way to let us know your child is home. Any student who arrives after the start of the school day must report to the office to receive a pass to class.

Signing Out Students During School Hours

If it is necessary to remove your child from school during the day, please follow these steps:

1.  Send a note with the child explaining to the teacher the time of dismissal and who will pick him/her up.

2.  Sign the student out in the office. Students will not be permitted to leave campus during the school day unless signed out and accompanied by an adult who is authorized to remove them from school (name listed on emergency card).

Contracted Study or Extended Absences

For information about extended absences, as well as more detailed attendance policies, please read the AUSD Attendance Procedures.

Otis School Parent/Guardian Classroom Observation Procedures

Parent/guardian classroom visits are welcome at Otis School. Although we welcome these visits, they can be disruptive to the classroom routine and instruction time. To prevent interference with instruction, and to ensure student and staff safety, all observations must be requested with written notice (click here for Request Form) at least 48 hours in advance, and a mutually agreed-upon time must be decided upon with the teacher, parent/guardian, and principal. In the absence of extraordinary circumstances, observations are limited to 30 minutes in length and no more than twice a month.  The district may designate an administrator or designee to accompany parents/guardians during parent-initiated observations. All visitors must comply with the expectations below.

For the observation, parents/guardians:

    •   Must be in the room at the agreed upon time
    •   Must be in an area designated by the teacher
    •   May not disrupt instruction
    •   May not harass staff
    •   May not speak with students, including their own child
    •   Must turn off cell phone/s
    •   May not take pictures or video

If the visitor wishes to speak to the teacher about the visit, (s)he must arrange this with the teacher after school, or by email or phone. Please keep in mind that when the class ends, recess is usually only 10 minutes long, and this is a time when the teacher can go to the bathroom and/or prepare for the next class. This is not a good time to discuss the visit with the teacher.

PE Reporting Policy

Otis values physical education (PE) as an integral part of child development, learning, and health. Students participate in regular PE classes with specialized teachers, bettering motor skills and movement capabilities; maintaining and learning about fitness; and gaining knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies as applied to learning and performance of physical activity.

In addition to PE classes, students at Otis spend time with their classroom teachers participating in physical education and movement. You can find teacher reports of those activity times here.

If you have any questions about PE at Otis, please visit the school office.
