Reflections--Explore the Arts for Fun and Recognition

Nov. 1, 2017, is the deadline for students to enter artwork in Reflections. Categories include Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Musical Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, and a Special Artist Division. Reflections is sponsored by PTA, and students who participate at Otis will have their artworks reviewed for possible participation at regional, state, and national levels.

Entering: How Does it Work?

1. First, from the six categories, choose one or more.

2. Read the General Rules and the Rules and How-to for your Category to find out how to submit your entry.

3. Think on the theme: Within Reach.

4. Get creative! Create your entry.

5. Submit your entry by November 1, 2017. Complete the ENTRY FORM and bring it and your entry to the office at school.

6. Entries chosen by the judges could go on to the district, state, and national levels for recognition and awards!

Review Criteria: How is the Artwork Judged?

Judges review entries in the grades K-2 division, the grades 3-5 division, and the Special Artists division. See the Student Packet for more information about these divisions. The judges are using these criteria:

  • Interpretation: How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement.
  • Creativity: How creative and original the piece is in its conception of the theme and its presentation.
  • Technique: The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/techniques of the arts area.

Artist Statement: What Do the Judges Want to Know?

In your artist statement, tell us about your work and what it means to you.

  • How does your work relate to the theme?
  • What is your personal connection to the theme?
  • What did you use to create your work (e.g. supplies, technology, instrumentation, props, etc.)?
  • What/Who was your inspiration?
