How to Volunteer

How to Volunteer at Otis

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Otis. In order to keep all students, staff, and volunteers safe and healthy, please ensure the following:

  • Otis has your fingerprint clearance on file
  • The AUSD Annual Volunteer Form has been completed and submitted to the school
  • The Otis Covid-19 Volunteer Survey has been submitted
  • You have emailed a copy of your vaccination card or the negative COVID test prior to the volunteer date to or
  • Volunteer has arranged date/time with the classroom teacher for Art or Garden Docent

  • Volunteering has been arranged with the Otis Office for lunch recess support

Otis Elementary welcomes and encourages volunteers from our Otis families and the community.

All adults wishing to volunteer must complete an annual Volunteer Form every year and provide a copy of photo identification.

Please email completed Volunteer Form and photo/scan of your photo ID to Otis Office Assistant, LaShonda Knox <> (the best option) or send to school with your child.

In addition to the annual Volunteer Form and on-file ID, Live Scan fingerprint clearance is required. Live Scan fingerprinting may be completed for a fee* and involves a criminal background check through the FBI and Department of Justice. This level of clearance can take up to six weeks (though is often faster).

Live Scan clearance is required only once and is valid for the entire time you volunteer while in the Alameda Unified School District. You can download the LiveScan fingerprinting form here. Bring the LiveScan fingerprinting form with you when you go to get your fingerprints** and keep a copy for yourself; you do not need to provide a copy of this form to Otis staff. Please wait one week from the time you get fingerprinted and then you can email Manya Morris and LaShonda Knox and ask them to check the school district list to confirm your clearance.

*Note: Please contact the PTA if the Live Scan fee is prohibitive for you.

**Live Scan location suggestions are posted on the Otis Facebook group and sent via Konstella message.

Please keep copies of everything you submit. These important requirements are in place to protect all of our children, as well as to protect you, the volunteer. Thank you for complying and for giving your time and talents to Otis!

Otis will be allowing two volunteers for Garden or Art Docent at any given time for each class. Volunteers will need to be OUTSIDE and MASKED while volunteering. Volunteers are strongly encouraged to ask their teachers how they can be helpful and be patient if their teachers need more time before they are ready for docent programs. Teachers will reserve outside spaces for lessons.

Lunch volunteers are needed! Anyone that would like to help out at lunch should contact Manya Morris and Tanya Harris. You also would need to have a current volunteer form and have fingerprint clearance through AUSD. (Lunch helping is not a PTA program.)

You are very welcome to join Frank Otis Elementary on Konstella and explore the Committees page for PTA-related volunteer opportunities!

If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us!
